A military helicopter crashed in Somalia, five dead.

Today, July 2, 2025, a Ugandan military helicopter crashed at Mogadishu International Airport, which was involved in the African Union's peacekeeping mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). According to spokesperson for the Ugandan military Felix Kulayigye, five passengers were killed in the incident. Three of the eight passengers survived, but sustained serious injuries and burns. Additionally, three civilians were injured due to the detonation of munitions on board.

The helicopter was engulfed in flames after the crash, said the Somali state news agency SONNA. Airport employee Farah Abdulle reported that smoke and flames were visible from afar over the helicopter, which was completely covered in smoke.

The African Union Mission in Support of Somalia confirmed the emergency landing of the helicopter before it was grounded, after which search and rescue operations began. Currently, efforts are underway to recover the crew and the remaining passengers from the crash site.
