The newly elected Pope Leo XIV expressed his thoughts regarding his papacy, highlighting the significance of artificial intelligence as one of the key issues for humanity. He also promised to continue some of the main priorities of his predecessor, Pope Francis. After being elected, Pope Leo XIV visited a shrine that holds great significance for his Augustinian order and Leo XIII.

This shrine, run by Augustinian monks, has played an important role in pilgrimage since the 15th century. The previous Pope Leo XIII elevated the status of this site to that of a minor basilica in the early 1900s and expanded the adjacent monastery.

After a lunchtime walk following his first official audience with the cardinals, Pope Leo XIV quoted his predecessor Francis and expressed his own mission statement, insisting on the importance of creating a more inclusive and caring Church for the faithful, one that cares for the 'least and the rejected.'

The Future of Pope Leo XIV's Pontificate

The Vatican reported that Leo XIV will keep his motto and coat of arms from Chiclayo, Peru, to emphasize the unity of the Church. The emblem with a burning heart and a book symbolizes the Augustinian order and the Holy Scriptures.

Information was also revealed about the pectoral cross that Leo XIV wears, given to him by the Augustinians when he was a cardinal. This cross contains relics of Saint Augustine and Saint Monica, who significantly influenced his spiritual development.

Recreating Himself with Pope Francis

Pope Leo XIV demonstrated empathy regarding artificial intelligence issues, explaining his choice of name through the connection with Pope Leo XIII. He stated that he plans to develop modern Catholic social teaching and respond to the challenges of new technologies.

«Our Time faces new challenges, among which is the progress of artificial intelligence. We must protect human rights, justice, and work in this context,» noted the Pope.

Leo XIV has already expressed his deep condemnation of the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine, calling it imperialistic in nature. His determination on this matter has impressed many and served as an important signal for the global community.
