Negotiations in London: The Line Between Ukraine and the US

The negotiations that took place in London regarding the end of the war in Ukraine were downgraded in status due to the cancellation of the visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The reason might be the confrontation of positions between Ukraine and the US, reflected in an official document.

Ukrainian diplomats prepared a document for European partners, urging not to discuss territorial issues until a 'full and unconditional ceasefire' is achieved. This position upset Washington as it does not comply with previous US agreements with Russia.

The cancellation of Rubio's visit led to the cancellation of a broad meeting of the foreign ministers of Ukraine, the UK, France, and Germany. The negotiations continue at a lower level under the guidance of US Special Envoy for Ukraine General Keith Kellogg.

This downgrade of the negotiations occurred at a critical moment, after US President Donald Trump warned of the possibility of suspending efforts in the absence of progress. Trump stated that he hopes for an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to be reached this week.

Ukrainian President's adviser Andriy Yermak, who halted his trip to London along with the ministers, emphasized that negotiations will focus on ways to achieve a 'full and unconditional ceasefire' as a first step toward achieving peace.

'We will work for peace,' he wrote on social media.

At the same Time, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko emphasized that Kyiv's position is unwavering: 'Ukraine is ready for negotiations, but is not ready to surrender.' She confirmed that Kyiv does not recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

According to diplomatic sources, among the conditions previously proposed by the US were the recognition of Russia's annexation of Crimea and recognition of Russian control over another 20% of Ukrainian territory. It was also suggested to cancel Ukraine's NATO membership and lift some sanctions against Russia by the US.

Amid the London negotiations, US Special Envoy Steve Vitkoff, who did not participate in the meeting in London, plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week.

Several times Trump has stated his plans to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine by May. He explained this with the necessity to end the conflict that has taken many lives and the growing threat of direct confrontation between the US and Russia with nuclear weapons.
